Collective nouns - Review
• Examples: army, audience, board, cabinet, class, committee, company, corporation
council, department, faculty, family, firm, group, jury, majority, minority, navy, public,
school, senate, society, team, troupe.
• What verbs forms and pronouns forms can we use with the collective noun? Singular or
plural form.
• When the members are part of a collective noun, that noun is singular and requires
singular verbs and pronouns: The government behaves as right winged. The group is
bad. The family is big.
• When the members are acting as individuals within the collective noun, the collective
noun is plural and requires plural verbs and pronouns: The government are on different
opinion concerning this question. The group start their long fight to develop. The family
are big eaters.
• When it is difficult to decide singular or plural to use, one can use a noun that brings the
difference and indicates the singular or plural form: The members of the government do
not agree in this issue. The students (of the class) start the competition.
Task: find examples in your readings.
